Run Rabbit Run

I’ve tried out a few different meditations during the last week. Shorter, self-directed ones (ten minutes or so) in which I just focus on the quiet and my breathing; and which serve really just to clear my mind and ‘centre’ myself. I’ve also tried longer pre-recorded (e.g. CDs) guided meditations from clairvoyants (about 30 – 45 minutes). While these were interesting and relaxing, I didn’t feel able to enter a meditative state – and that I wasn’t able to keep up with the pace. One of these guided meditations was a journey, taking the individual to a number of places. I kept thinking: Slow down! I haven’t got there yet! I was always running to keep up.

The third type of meditation I’ve been trying, which seems to suit me more; is a longer, self-directed meditation (30 – 45 minutes – although not timed, I just finish when it feels right). My beautiful crystals have arrived, and I usually select a few and have them near, or on me, while I meditate. I say a protective prayer and then focus on visualising the white light around myself.

It is during these meditations, often about 20 minutes in when I’m super relaxed, that I begin to notice things. Sometimes I get flashes of something (a word, or an image) and if I’m not ‘awake’ or self-aware enough to notice them, they disappear within a second.

Today, my good husband went out to the hardware shop, and as soon as he’d gone, I turned off the TV, selected a few crystals and lay down to meditate. Some time in, I had a random flash of a rabbit. A white rabbit, sitting in the grass on a hill, a couple of metres away from me. The image very nearly slid away from me, unnoticed, until I latched onto it at the last second and brought it back. I started watching the rabbit, which was very calm and unmoving. The song Run Rabbit Run popped into my head. Run Rabbit, Run Rabbit, Run Run Run. Don’t give the Farmer his Fun Fun Fun (I had heard this song before, but didn’t know who wrote it. For your information, it was written in 1939 by Noel Gay and Ralph Butler).

I looked at the rabbit, but it stubbornly refused to budge. I could sense the song (i.e. the danger) was coming from behind me. I walked over to the rabbit, and sat down on the grass next to it. Together, we looked up to see what we were being told to run away from. There was nothing there. Nothing to be afraid of.

I finished the meditation when my good husband came home and loudly professed ‘what are you doing!?’ and consequently hopped (pardon the pun) onto the internet. I found a website called Shamanism: Working with Animal Spirits (http://www.animalspirits.com/index1.html), which included a description of the rabbit as an animal spirit. The characteristic that stood out to me was: Moving through fear.

  1. I am a novice in this area but my understanding is that different meditation methods can achieve different goals. There is a difference between using meditation as a calming or relaxation tool, using it to look inward at your thoughts, and using it as a grounding technique to avoid being distracted or disturbed by intrusive thoughts, fears or memories. Have a read about the use of Mindfulness in daily life. Russ Harris, who is an Australian based GP with training in psychology, runs training in and uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in his practice, and has written several very good, practical books on the topic. Have a look at 'The Happiness Trap' and 'ACT with Love', which focusses on relationships.
